Re: 100hp 1972 ign problem

You'll be looking for something/anything out of the ordinary, hopefully you'll be able to see whatever is arcing in that area.

That 1972 100 model has a sensor (no points). With the cap removed and the coil wire unscrewed, you can have the key in the ON position and simply drag a feeler gauge across that sensor which would make a spark jump from the coil wire to ground if the ignition pulsepack and coil is okay.

Before removing the flywheel however, you might want to use a smaller voltage bulb and do that test I mentioned again. If the bulb does not glow, and you do have voltage being applied to the pulsepack, that would normally indicate a faulty pulsepack. However, there could also be a frayed sensor wire under the distributor cap, a broken wire between the sensor and pulsepack, something of that nature that would interfere with that test.

With the dist cap removed, you'll be able to test those wires etc with a ohm meter.

1st step.... Do that powerpacl/pulsepack again with a lower voltage bulb.

2nd step.... Remove the flywheel and inspect.

Thanks Joe, I guess I dont under stand where the sparks are being generated. Dosnt the fact that I am getting a spark sound confirm the pack is OK??

My 1968 100HP Johnson has 5/16inchX24threads for the flywheel puller bolt holes. I broke my $7.00 Harbor Freight puller trying to get mine off. Let us know how your AAP unit works or please send me a PM. Good luck!

got the fly wheel off and found burn marks on the cap. I would think this is a problem. this time working on it, the sparking wasnt there. I eather burned up the pack or hopefully it shuts it self down during problems...
It looks like the cap and coils are 1 pc....True???

Re: 100hp 1972 ign problem

sorry Joe
Im not understaning, Do you think the pack is bad now, or will it shut down?.

Also
In regards to the rectifier you suggested, what amperage should I look for?

Re: 100hp 1972 ign problem

Willyclay,
I used the puller from Advanced, I tightened it down as far as I thought I could without it breaking and then gave the center bolt a couple smacks with a hammer. I then got anouther 1/4 turn on it. I smacked it again with the hammer and on the 3rd one. It poped off.

When I say smack, it was a light one.

Hope I finialy helped someone

Re: 100hp 1972 ign problem

In one post you asked "It looks like the cap and coils are 1 pc....True???"

And I replied "True?? No..... Just a tight fiit."

Apparently that confused you. I meant that the stator is simply a tight fit upon the distributor cap.

Now..... with the distributor cap removed, to test the pulsepack, have the coil wire unscrewed from the distributor cap and have the brass threaded end approximately 1/4" away from any powerhead ground.

With the key in the on position, slide a feeler gauge across the sensor at the timer base (it won't shock you). When you do that and if the pulsepack is okay, there should be one strong blue lightning like flame jump across that 1/4" gap.

Let us know what you find.

Re: 100hp 1972 ign problem

Well I replaced the cap, rotor, pack and coil.

Still wont start :(

I now can see the light testing the output of the pack and input of the coil.

I dont have any spark from the coil. I unscrewed the coil wire from the cap and brought it down to a ground...nothin.
double checked the grounds

They eather sold me a bad one or the wrong one.

and wouldnt you know it, the old coil was in my other car..

Going back to change the back to the original and hope for the best.

After unscrewing that coil wire, hopefully you reattached the coil to its mounting so that the ground etc is as it should be. If so, seeing as how the light bulb glow test indicates a good pulsepack, that coil should fire from the threaded brass terminal to ground.

Check the coil for continuity as follows:
(Battery Capacitance Discharge Coils - Continunity Test)
(Joe Reeves)
Remove the primary wire the screw type terminal. Remove the coil and unscrew the HT wire from the distributor cap.

Connect the black lead of a ohm meter to the HT wire, then with the red ohm meter lead, touch the ground wire of the coil.

Then touch (still with the red lead) the wire that normally attaches to the powerpack output lead. You should get a reading on both touches (contacts). If not, check the HT wire by unscrewing it from the coil. After removing the wire, the check can be repeated using the internal threaded prong within the coil instead of the HT wire. Poor or no continuity of a coil is one reason for erratic or no ignition and/or s/plug fouling.

Re: 100hp 1972 ign problem

I put the old coil back on.....
She finaly wants to start. Its dry docked and no water for muffs. I now have spark and she started twice. But I shut it down in 2 seconds.

Joe...THANK YOU VERY MUCH :):):)

in regards to the diode, Iknow 12 volt or higher, but how many amps??

Re: 100hp 1972 ign problem

I've got a similar problem on a very similar engine. I've got 12v to the plus pack and while cranking I get a signal from the red wire ( backprobed ) from under the flywheel. I get nothing from the wire ( marked not to connect to a 12v source ) going to the coil. I understand automotive coils, not this design though. The coil and pulsepack are supposedly new, but I'm not getting spark from the high tension lead of the coil at all, but since I'm not getting any source of voltage from what I can only assume would be the "+" side of the coil, that the coil isn't getting energized to send out a spark of any sort.

I'm not really sure what I'm looking to find , from the what I can only guess at is the output wire from the pulse pack , in regards to voltage, or ???

This motor is a new acquisition, so there are plenty of ???'s about it that we are trying to sort out while we wait for a proper manual to get here in the mail.

Re: 100hp 1972 ign problem

Red..... Re-read my reply on this subject pertaining to using the small bulb in testing the pulsepack. The pack requires 12v being applied to in in the ON and START position BUT only to the specified input lead (usually purple or purple/green) whichever applies to your engine.

It DOES NOT want to have 12v applied to the coil! The powerpack (pulsepack) handles that.

NOTE..... Start your own thread and topic to continue. As it stands your question is buried under the 2ndd page of "Jeepster's" topic.

Re: 100hp 1972 ign problem

Will do that...start a new thread. Might not have to yet, as we discovered that the controls we bought for the motor are missing the "neutral safety switch" within the control box. I suppose we won't see much spark without that, eh?

If I still have a no spark problem after getting the controls fixed, I'll start a new thread for everyone to peruse over. Thanks for the reply though!

Re: 100hp 1972 ign problem

FYI - the bulb that must be used for the ampflier test that Joe Reeves mentions must be a small bulb...
