I need to buy a new engine for my boat. How can I check the engine year and model without removing it from the boat? Can I tell from the block casting? I need to know if it's 1 or 2-piece rear main seal.
Thanks

Re: How do I check my engine year?

I pulled the engine out. I saw a big rubber gasket at the rear where the crank shaft connected to the drive. So I guess it's a 1-piece seal (1987 and later). I also check my block casting number:10054727. According to Mortec, it's a 86 and up. I'm confused. I need to order parts to rebuild it but when I went to Northernautopartsdotcom, there are several options for chevy 350 with VIN number 6,7,8. Which one should I choose?
Also is there a better place to buy parts?
Thanks

Is the Engine a Mercruiser? Outside of the markings on the Risers, a Mercruiser Engine will have a serial # riveted to the Engine above the rear of the starter. I believe with that more detailed information about the engine may be determined. There are other places this plate may be depending on the year of the Engine. On my 98 what was left of the plate was above the engine.

It's an OMC. I read that the serial number was supposed to be on one of the valve covers but i couldn't find any. i guess they were replaced by the previous owner with the chromed after market ones. Now I don't know how to order the right parts.
