Ok, i'm used to working on I/O and now have a 1981 outboard.
The service manual states 2 special tools needed to install the impeller housing seals. One is a sleave that goes over the driveshaft to slide the seal over and the other is one to seat the seal in the pump housing.
Is this really needed or can i use another method?

Use a piece of wax paper or sandwich bag over the end of the drive shaft. A socket of the correct size will install the seal in the pump housing.

Using the protection over the shaft, will protect the seals rubber sealing surface as it passes over the drive shaft splines.....(this is almost X rated...:))
