Crazy Story. Dead Motor?

THIS IS A LONG POST, BUT THE STORY IS WORTH IT AND I CAN USE ALL THE ADVICE I CAN GET. THANKS

I've grown up fishing and hunting so I'm not new to the outdoors. I am, however, new to boats and boat motors. I've fished with friends etc in their boats, but I'd never owned my own boat till about a month ago.

I found a 14' aluminum boat for a heck of a deal and bought a 1981 25hp Evinrude tiller handle motor to put on it. I was taking the MCAT during spring break a few weeks ago so my brain was completely shot. I decided to take a break and go run my new motor. I borrowed a gas can from my cousin and hit the road. The motor ran great, everything was beautiful. A few weeks later after school slowed down I decided to actually go fishing in the boat. Took it out to a local lake, fished for a few hours, grabbed a bite to eat, then went back out with two of my buds to find some frogs after dark.

The motor had run great that day, but after a few hours we noticed some oil (or so we thought) leaking from a joint in the lower unit just above the prop. I tightened up the joint and the oil (not oil) stopped leaking. We'd been looking for frogs for about an hour and we decided to leave. I pressed the start button once, twice, then after the third time it became hell on earth. My motor exploded, burst into five foot flames, and almost killed me when the cowling flew straight past my head about fifteen feet in the air and landed in the front of the boat. One of my buddies gave the mayday and jumped over board, the other yelled obscenities and helped me pour water on the motor. After about five minutes and 8 ice chest loads of water we got the fire out. We got back to the shore with the trolling motor and were speechless to say the least.

Long story short, the motor is (obviously being a 81) a two stroke and I forgot to mix oil. Evidently with the gas being more volatile than the gas/oil mix, the spark caused an explosion and since we had sealed the lower unit leak, all that oil from the earlier leak, which was actually gas, filled the entire lower unit and the whole engine case and caught fire.

Amazingly, the engine looks pretty darn good. All of the electrical cables are bubbled and melted, but the actual engine [outside] is unburned. I took the spark plugs out, one was broken in half, and turned the flywheel by hand with no problem. Then I ran compression tests and both cylinders were just under 150psi.

I feel that the consistency between cylinders is a good sign, but I feel sure there are other problems.

Any suggestions as to where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Yea I'm glad I'm alive to be able to tell it.

FYI, I'm going to need a new cowling since the latches were blown off. If anyone knows where i can get one to fit an early 80's 25hp Evinrude please fill me in.

I'm not sure what happened to your motor or why it blew up but if you forgot to mix the gas and oil, it would have seized long before that point as the oil is necessary for lubrication. My guess is that you had a leak under your cowling and it simply ignited and the fireworks ensued..

Maybe I just don't understand the sequence.

Re: Crazy Story. Dead Motor?

Yea I can't believe the motor ran as long as it did with no lubrication. I've seen people put regular gas in weed-eaters and they ran terrible to say the least.

I think the gas leak problem was unrelated to the fact that I didn't mix oil and gas, but it sure added to things whenever the engine decided to blow.

Who knows, maybe I can get five more years out of the engine since the compression is still good...?

Re: Crazy Story. Dead Motor?

You had a gas leak. Probably a busted hose, but of course it's burned up now. It had absolutely nothing to do with having or not having oil in it. Either way it is highly flammable.

How were the frog legs?

Unfortunately, we didn't find any frogs that we felt like keeping. Didn't catch many fish either so it was a pretty bad day all around.

Re: Crazy Story. Dead Motor?

is there just a standard wiring kit I can buy for that motor? Or do I just need to go to the hardware store and buy a bunch of generic electric wire.

Re: Crazy Story. Dead Motor?

There probably is i got my wire harness from ebasicpower.com, iboats sells some to and rapair.cam sells them also. All the sites all sold the same brand harness for my boat which was CDI (i beleive) I don't know about your size motor or if either of these sites carry it or knot. Just google internal wire harness for johnson or whatever and you should find what is commercially availible. YOu can always make one but in my case i wanted a new one instead of spliceing into rotton wires. I to have an 81 johnson, but a 60hp.

Things that make you go "FOOM"!

So, where did you mount the new fire extinguisher?

Re: Crazy Story. Dead Motor?

lol, my girlfriend bought me an Academy gift card and the first things we bought was a paddle and a fire extinguisher.

You should have seen my roommates and I when I was testing the compression the other night. I had a full faced motorcycle helmet and goggles. They were hidden behind my truck with the water hose. We didn't even have gas hooked up to it or anywhere around, but we were still pretty freaked.

Re: Crazy Story. Dead Motor?

Ever watch those cop shows on TV? Just last week they had one filmed somewhere in Florida. They were boat cops and were investigating something when a neighboring boat had an explosion just like you described. The camera captured the footage of the cowl flying up in the air....

The Police Captain they were interviewing said "it happens all the time"....

Glad you weren't hurt; Chuck

I'm not sure that the lack of frogs and fish make your day "bad"! You did not kill or seriously injure yourself or your buds. Your boat did not sink and your motor sounds salvageable. Sounds like an "okay" day and you learned a lot. If you are going to attempt to get the motor going again, invest in a manual. Good luck and keep us posted on what you do.

Thought you might want to go to Ebay.com and keep an eye on item number 220108416065.

If you copy the number and paste it to their search window, you should find it easily.

Re: Crazy Story. Dead Motor?

Ezeke, thanks for the find. I've been looking on Ebay alot but have only been able to find 50hp models which i don't think will fit on mine. That one must have been posted very recently. Looks like exactly what i need.

I started trying to look up exactly what year my motor was and I can only find information about pre-1980 models. Does anyone know of a list of 1980 and latter models?

My model number is E25TWLCSA, s/n: E0001226
