Hi all, Just wentout to start 89 four winns with a 3.0l omc engine. oil had water in it. Changed oil and started up engine, Ran well. Checked oil after it ran for 1 min. full of water again. I did not winterize it properly as it was kept in the garage. I should have! My mistake. I drained out the oil and water and refilled with fresh oil to protect it until I get a new shortblock. My question is where can I find a block or short block for a reasonable price? Unless there is another possiblereason it is sucking in water? thanks for the help.

What do you consider reasonable?
Rapido Marine
Michigan Motorz
are 2 places that have been touted frequently.

I have a 3.0 bare block for around $300. But, unless you do a lot of engine work, By the time you install all your innards and buy gaskets and such, you'll probably be better off buying a long block from the pros. Not much of a salesman, am I...

You might want to make sure you dont need a long block or just heads.

Might just want to go ahead and get the long block. Most places only charge you $100-$200 more for that. Then you don't have to worry about internal parts being worn out and not fitting up properly.

Thanks for the replies. How would I check to see if it is the head? There are no exterior cracks that I can see on the heads or block. It sure would be nice if it was just the head. I do not think it is the head gasket motor runs too good and compression is good. Thanks

I have the same problem. Question: What is the best way to drain out water and oil that is in the crankcase? I try to suck it out through the dipstick and it is to thick. I don't want to try to run the motor because that creates a bigger mess.

I will pull the head in the next few days. Hope, that may be the problem. Do not think I will be that lucky though. If any has a block around N.C. give me a shout. I really do not mind rebuilding the motor as it is a 89 orginal and a very basic motor. I got the oil out by unbolting the drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan and let it drain for about an hour. Thanks

If it were me I would stick a 100-150 watt shoplight under the oil pan and heat it up for 12/24 hours. Either that or undo the dipstick at the pan and drain it out the back of the transom. Messy but effective.

Yeah, Thats what I think too. But, One can hope, Only question is when running water through using muffs water does not go in the oil.Only when engine is running. Wonderwhy? Going to pull head thurs and take a look and get the whole picture. Might be good excuse to sell and buy bigger boat. Ha-Ha.

A block pressure check with some water in the block will reveal any hidden cracks in the block. Ask me how I know.

One more question, If I decided to sell instead of repairind what do you think a fair price would be? 1989 four winns 16' open bow. boat is in good shape, no rips, solid floor. windshield has crack. Every thing works except for the cracked block. Will include trailer which has new tires and is in good shape as well. Thoughts Thanks

You could pull the intake manifold off and look at the block there. That's what I did to find the crack in my block.
