Hello...I am new to this forum and looking forward to getting info and helping as well. My 1988 Johnson 120 (looper?) needs a new tilt motor, I guess, as the housing is wasting away to nothing. It works fine for now. What happens if I don't replace it? Will I be exposing internal parts that will die after a bath of salt water? It looks like there is a rear mounting bolt that is impossible to get to without lifting the motor from the transom. Any tricks to avoid that? It is a shame, the motor is fairly low hours - maybe 500 - but age issues like this are cropping up. It smokes upon startup...maybe the vro pump as I saw in another thread. It runs well but I am wondering how much one puts into an old motor like this...and what is it doing to the Chesapeake with its exhaust.

I used to have a real sputter problem and had to be careful upon restart after the engine died, or it would seem to quickly flood. Last year I started using Valvetec gas and it seems to run better. I have never rebuilt the carbs but I would think the problem would continue irrespective of gas, if they were the problem. It does not idle great, but better than before.

Thanks!
