89 alpha 1 drive for a presure test what is it and what should a retail price be to check it..is it like testing a car rad.???? or a major thing. also how do you know when its time to replace seals on a drive? thanks in advance
bob
All they do is drain the gear lube, screw the hose into the drain hole.Pressurize to about 12 to 14 psi and wait, turning the prop shaft a little at a time. Then they vacuum it down and do the same thing again..I would think an hour labor would cover it unless they are removing the drive from the boat.
If you don't have water in your gear lube, or an external leak, then don't worry about it. No reason to change seals if they are ok and not leaking.
If the gear lube is free of water and there are no external leaks, then it won't fail a pressure or vacuum check.
