I just boat my 1990 bayliner capri last summer and the first time that I took it out it didnt want to pick up speed even though the speedometer said I was going 35mph, I was probably going 5. After a short while the engine just cut out and wouldnt start back up. It is getting fuel but I haven't checked the fuel pressure to see if it is correct. I did notice that the over heat plug in the side of the engine looked as if the plastic around the wire had melted some. I don't know anything about boats yet so any info can help. The engine is an l- drive force engine. I believe it is 95 hrspwr. Thank You Josh.

If that melted, the motor might have gotten hot enough to be damaged internally. Do a compression test if you can to see if it's bad. You might get lucky and just have a blown head gasket or gummy carbs, but don't hold your breath. Is the motor tight, or will it still turn?

Anything melted is not a good sign. It signals way too much heat. Was the motor cooling ??
As Willy says a compression check is the first thing to do as long as it will still turn over and go from there. Hopefully there is nothing too much wrong in there.

Going to do a compression check, and the manual I have says to ground the spark plug wires to the engine to disable the ignition system. Is this right. Just use an alligator clip up in the plug wire and ground it to the engine. This wom't harm anything. Also I charged the battery and it is turning over nicely just won't start.
