Hello all I just finished converting a 9.5 Evenrude to short shaft (thanks again for iwombat) and just boat tested it.
1971 sears 12 foot alum. It only did 6.2 mph GPS at WOT.
The weight total (boat motor trolling battery and two men) was 550lbs. slight above the rated 488 total payload.
There was a slight breeze of 8-10 kts.
The motor did not want to keep running unless i left the choke on.
I tried mixture adjustments to full rich.
The lake elevation was 867 feet at 65 F so density altitude should not have been a problem. This motor was bought as a long shaft from an old Salt who had it stored in a barn for 20 years.
Any suggestions. Before I get on the the 1 month waiting list for the one marine repair shop in town. Merced, Ca Thanks

Make sure you have spark on both cylinders, and the carb probably needs a rebuild. Don't be suprised if you need a new fuel pump too.

Re: 9.5 Evenrude Carb Cleaning/tuning

The fact that you have to choke it to keep it running says that the carb is gummed or dirty. The high speed jet is in the very bottom of it, deep in the hole behind the hex plug. That jet has to be absolutly clean with not a trace of any gum or coating in it. It takes a special screwdriver to get it out, but you can make your own out of any 'driver with a 3/16" round shank. Grind / file the end as shown. The secret is getting the sides of the blade paralell so it doesn't spread the soft brass jet and make it tighter than ever in the hole.
