mercury 25 won't idle

I have a '91 Mercury 25hp and the engine was accidently pushed from neutral straight to WOT. The engine screamed but didn't go anywhere. Later I found the gear change linkage was thrown out but after refitting this the engine won't idle and will only start and run with the fast idle lever lifted. The engine is running rough (running on muffs) and every now and then makes a noise that I can only describe as sounding like a dog yelping. With the fast idle lever up I am unable to try and put it into gear. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Sorry it's taken so long to get back but I work away from home and have just got back. The compression and spark are both good and i've checked the ignition over and the carb but still can't find anything wrong.

When ever you free rev. a 2 cycle engine you stand a good chance of damageing a reed valve, If you have cked. compression and have spark, here is a good chance that it has eaten a reed, if there is anything good involed here it's the fact that unlike the older engines you can ck. the reeds by removing the carb and manifold to ck. them not have to split the crankcase. The down side is if it has a broken reed you must find the piece before using the engine

Just got back this weekend and checked the reeds, all are okay no sign of any damage. I've managed to get the engine to idle just by increasing the idle speed but it still misses a lot and sounds rough i've also noticed a lot of exhaust fumes are coming out around the top of the engine, possibly from the point that the gear lever goes down but I can't be sure.
