I recently bought an older Johnson Seahorse 6hp Outboard (Model #: 6R77M) (Serial #: J4719682). I was wondering what year this motor is. I'm currently in the process of replacing the spark plugs, as they were old and not worth my effort to try to clean them. I'm not sure how hard they are going to be to find though. And more trouble: when I first opened the engine cover, there was a small plastic piece in the bottom of the engine compartment. It seems as though it has broken off of the top of the starter. I'm not sure if this part is important or not, and where i could get a new one. Also, a repair manual would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Old Johnson Seahorse 6hp Outboard

The model is a 1977 6HP Johnso. The parts for the starter are available from any OMC/BRP dealer, just give them the model number.

Part numbers are listed in the parts catalog for your model, you can download if you wish:

http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e

If the broken piece is the black plastic gear-like part it is 318447, it also requires a roll pin to hold it in place.

You will find a service manual at Ebay.com right now. Copy and Enter 2483732792 at their search window. You probably cannot beat the deal.

6=6Hp
R=Recoil start (as if there's anything but on a 6)
77=1977
M is a suffix denoting unspecified subgroup

No, it's not the plastic gear, it seems to be part number 0388322, the Cam Follower and Lever. What does this part do, and is it necessary to get it running?
