I picked up a used "project" boat, nice trailer and it had an 85hp Evinrude (1970's) on it. I am using the correct gas/2-cycle mixture, checked lower unit and looks fine, the engine will turn over but won't start. It seems like there is a leak where the fuel line connects to the fuel filter. Any suggestions on how to test the engine to see if it will start? One person suggested started fluid spray? Cherndog

I actually heard spraying starting fluid isnt good for a 2 stroke I avoid it.

starting fluid is the 2 strokes worst enemy, it has no lubricant, and strips what's in the engine. use some of the premixed gas, in a squeeze or spray bottle. have you check the basics, compression, spark, blue, jumps 1/2 inch, fuel/air leaks check these an try the premix. and post your results.

It'd help to know which 70ish 115 you have. There's a world of difference between a 1970 85, a 1973 85 and a 1979 85. They all use the 50:1 mix though.

If you're saying that even after you squeeze the bulb no fuel gets to the filter, make sure the bulb in in the line correctly. There's an arrow for the fuel flow path.
