I have 1979 Johnson 6hp and 16 in. transom. I,ve had since 86 and it's runs good. Would i gain power with a shorter shaft motor. It would be better in shallow water. The motor looks like it has extension above the lower unit. Can that just be removed ? What would it require to convert? Would new lower end or expensive parts be needed. Any info would be appreciated, thank you, Dave

To convert it you have to replace the drive shaft with the short version. Then there is the shift rod. I always used to cut off exactly 5" and file a new notch for the connector screw. However, looking at the parts book for '79 they show a kink at the top end of the shift rod which I am unfamiliar with. Looks like that would preclude cutting it off and require changing the rod. Gearcase disassembly required for that. I don't know the purpose of the kink.
