I just purchased a 24' 91 Sundancer Tri-Toon & it does not have a motor, I need help with a size recommendation. It has controls for a mercury, but the power plug for the motor has a Mariner tag.... Not sure if they interchange or what.

I'm looking for the most simple procedure, & I would like to run around 30mph on the water or close.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've found a 115hp Mariner for a good price, is this enough power for a boat of this size?
It weighs approx. 1800 lbs.

what is the max rating on the boat. there is a plate on the boat that has max hp. i imagine that the 115 would get you there or close, but do'nt go over the max hp for the boat.

It does not have a placard that shows that, but the person I purchased it from said Sundancer told him it was rated max at 175hp

I just don't want to underdo it either.

I am sorta wondering about prop size & pitch as well.

I think the tri-toons will take a little more HP; I don't know too much about them as I have always owned Vee-hull boats. My neighbor just repowered his 'toon, he went from a 65HP to a 90; gained a little speed, but claims his fuel consumption is way lower.

As far as prop sizing, you are really going to have to decide on a motor, pick a recommended prop and experiment from there. You will have to actually have the boat in the water with the prop on the motor to see where the RPMs are at WOT, that will help you determine where to go from your starting point.

A 200hp merc or mariner should fit nicely on that boat, with a 21pitch 4 or 5 blade prop .....
