I have a 1988 88hp Evinrude spl. I am trying to drop lower unit to change water pump. Is this going to require a special tool to be able to disconnect the shift linkage from under the carbs? Also If have just installed this engine on an older 21 ft. Marquee that was converted from stern drive to outboard and I am wanting to reprop engine will a automotive tach work for this?
Thanks

I use a 1/4" extra long extension with a universal and (I think) a 7/16" socket without removing the carbs. I have a pair of 87 110 hp which sould be the same.

Hello,

I have the 88 Horsepower SPL 1989 model E88MSLCER that I did my water pump on and where the shift linkage connects under the carb I had a pin that you pulled to release the shift linkage. Basically this pin is on the port left side of the engine beside the carbs. Follow the throttle linkage comming into the engine and under that throttle linkage you will see a pin, like a diaper looking pin, remove it and pull the linkage towards you away from the engine and the shift shaft linkage disconnects without removing the carbs. It was't that bad of a job but you will need help putting it back on because when you raise the lower unit back up to mate with the mid section that shift shift shaft wants to turn on you and becuase it has a bend to it will get caught up and not pass that access holeleading under the carbs so get a buddy to get a pairof long needle nose pliers to keep it staright and it should go on easyand don't force it on or you will bend or miss align and have to start over again. Just take your time and it will go smoothly for you. How does your motor run and is it powerful? I am staioned in Korea in the Air Force and wish I was home to run my boat it is 80 to 88 degrees back in Scott AFB Illinois. I will be back in September on my midtour so I hope to get back on the water for a little bit before it gets to cold hopefully it will be a late summer this year. Take care and good luck on your water pump install. Those motors are great motors and very reliable.

Tashasdady,

Thank you and thank you for serving our country in that dreadful Vietnam war. I really respect you and everyone else that has served now and in the past. My dad was in the Army(retired Feb 1986) and he served a tour in vietnam. He has battlescars from shrapenel pieces that blew up around him. He doesn't like to talk about it much. It is great to serve our country. I believe every young man or woman should serve at least 4 years at a minimum to have a better respect for our country and the good ole USA, because I have a great respect for it.:)

First Thanks for serving and this was a lot of help ( do you think using a heavy string attached to the shift leaver ) before lowering the lower unit would help with the reinstall.
