Re: Mericruiser 3.0LX cylinder head bolt torque

I have Managed to get it back together took it out for a spin and she crank and ran good in my yard ( I did have water running thru it)
Lifters rattleing a little
Hit the water she ran good :D
got out of the no wake zone gave her a little gas Still good
push the throttle to plane her out (Not full throttle)
she went to rattleing like crazy NOT a Knock like i broke a rod but rather like i left a rocker arm way too loose :(
I shut her down just to realize i left my 5/8 socket at home so i never removed the valve cover
I started it back up same as above but this time i went straight to planing her out NO Noise until it leveled out so i ease into the throttle a little more
noise gets worse then i loose power not alot but very noticable before shutting it down again i took the oil cap off it had alot of blow by and when i shut it down both times alot of dieseling the last time i did not think it would shut off

Has A rough idle but it will fire right up every time you hit the starter like i said earlier no noise at a idle other than a little lifter noise

Any help would be appreciated

Not a post I like to make,or even see someone make.I wish we could solve all problems.

But I really think you need a manual, one printed by Mercruiser.

What year is 3.0LX. do you have the EST distributor, if so, did you use a shunt to set in base timing to reset timing after reinstalling the head?
How did you adjust the valves?

Re: Mericruiser 3.0LX cylinder head bolt torque

I am sorry guys sounds ugly i know

I didnt Hammer it
NO Bent Rods

Engine still starts rough idle but fires right up:)

Its a 98 mrcruiser GM 181 CID 3.0LX

I did not set the timing Thus the dieseling :D got it
I understand to set the timing can be rough i could use some pointers

I set the the valves by rotateing the engine to the Comp stroke and tightening them until until i could just swivel the push rods set them this way on alot of engines and tweaked as needed I did run the engine to pump up the lifters first (engine sit for a few months)

Sorry guys i didnt mean to show my stupidity I mostly handle Maint on most anything but my brother had written the boat off getting ready to scrap it so i thought i would give her one last chance

Re: Mericruiser 3.0LX cylinder head bolt torque

Merc (and Volvo) have had problems keeping head gaskets in those engines. With the EST ignition they made many small changes to get the timing and lean carb mixture to work together without destroying the engine.
Are you sure you weren't hearing pinging and not lifters rattling?
Here is a link to manual #13. Without knowing the SN of your engine, it may even be the right manual for your engine.
Anyway. Look it over, it has HOW to set the timing ..... in detail (section 4B)
How to adjust the valves...... in detail ( section 3A)

Re: Mericruiser 3.0LX cylinder head bolt torque

Thanks Don

The Link shows 6 pages mostly just the index Couldnt open anything

i am pretty sure it was lifter noise Like taking a ball peen hammer and tapping a lifter that has been presurized to remove the retaining clips without dropping the lifter in the cylinder

does that make sense

I will be removing the Valve Cover AGAIN soon to look at the Push rods AGAIN
just to make sure (since some of the posts have me concerned looked at them once will double check)

Thanks again

Just scroll down to the index and put your cursor over the section you want.

Like I said, move your cursor over the index (manual outline) section. Move it over the sub section (guess I should have said sub in the first post)
Then watch the cursor change from a fist to a pointing finger, that, is a link to a section that will open. Be patient, some are large files.

With the exception of the timing check
