I have a 1976 Evinrude 135hp outboard. It has been running good from about a month since i pulled it out of storage. But now when i pump the bulb on the fuel line gas/oil leaks out the bottom of the carburetor. Also when i can get it started it leaks out a lot! And since there is not enough gas getting to it i cant take it out of high idol. When the high idol lever is up all the way it will jump around from 2000-5000 rpm. (It usually high idols at about 4400rpm) I just had the carburetor rebuild, fuel lines replaced, and a new fuel pump and filter put on. I was told it might be water in my fuel causing it to affect the needle?? Any ideas? Thanks

Re: Carburetor Leaks Gas/Oil

did this start immediately after the work, or weeks later? if immediately, if you paid a mech to rebuild the carbs, take it back. the float is not closing. water does not cause a carb to overflow. also sounds like the link n sinc is screw up.

Fast idle at 4400 RPM???? Seems like a good way to destroy an engine.

Did the mechanic say that it was water? Don't go back to that quack.

where on the carb is the fuel leaking out of. also here is the test for the float, if you squeaze the primer bulb can you see fuel squirting into the carbs, i think the floats are not set right, but also could be link and sync

A carb rebuild consicts of new gaskets sounds like the mech didn't do that, also the newer needle have a viatron tip and a keeper that goes on the float check for those things, also a check the carbs links for loose screws.

Re: Carburetor Leaks Gas/Oil

The boat started up after i got it out of the shop in April. Today I have been able to start it, but only for short periods of time until it dies out. The gas/oil seems to be leaking from the bottom right corner of the carb. I tightened everything i could but gas still is leaking out. Another thing I have noticed is that when i run it there is a lot of oil i believe coming out the exhaust and also slug type build up inside the prop. I pulled the recently replaced spark plugs and they seemed to be covered in the same stuff. Also it is producing a lot of smoke when i run it at home with the earphones on. To me it seems like it is running really rich but i don't see how since i am very cautious with the oil-fuel mixture. (50/1) I'm not to part savvy yet so someone is going to have to explain the link and sync and also what the float is.

Re: Carburetor Leaks Gas/Oil

The float is inside the carb, and it literally floats. When the carb bowl fills up with fuel the float rises and, in turn, closes a valve thus shutting off the fuel. As gas is drawn from the carb into the engine the float lowers allowing a little more fuel in until it rises up enough to shut the valve again. The cycle then continues.

If your float is mis-adjusted, or is broken and won't float anymore, it won't shut off the fuel intake to the carbs properly and you'll leak fuel.

Your motor is running rich because your carbs are overflowing and dumping some of that overflow right into the engine. The rest is overflowing onto the ground or into the water.

------

The link and sync is the process of matching up the opening of the throttle plates with the advance of the ignition timing.

Re: Carburetor Leaks Gas/Oil

Ok i found a diagram of my carb. I don't have a repair manual but im going to get one tomorrow. Is reajusting the float an easy process? And just how would I know if it is the flot? Will I be able to tell by looking at it once i disasemble my carb? Im a bit nervous about doing this work because I dont want to screw anything up and have some repair guy charge me $xxx to fix it. Also when i got my crab rebuild by the repair shop could they have messed this float up? And if so should they be fixing this problem for free?

Re: Carburetor Leaks Gas/Oil

If you're going to go to the trouble of removing and tearing apart the carb you might as well go ahead and get a carb kit and do a proper rebuild. Kits are cheap, and the hardest part about a rebuild is the removal and re-installation of the carbs.

All that aside, I'd be taking it back to the shop that supposedly rebuilt the carbs and demand they fix the float problem. Do you have the repair invoice? I'd be checking to make sure there's a couple of carb kits listed.

I'm taking it back to the repair shop and demanding them to fix it for real this time. Thanks everyone for your help.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Probably still ought to pick up the repair manual though :)

Ok i went out and got the repair manual. I took apart the carburetor and found that the needle wasn't moving right in its seat. I pulled it out checked it cleaned it and then it worked properly. How would i prevent the needle from sticking again? A drop of oil maybe?

They only really stick if there's gunk, or they're misaligned. Fuel would just wash any lubrication right out. I always open and close the float a few times to make sure everything is all lined up and not binding.

Did you take it back to the shop? I'd give em heck as they should have fixed it for you. You should not have to do the work!
