All boats have them or should! It helps the metal componants from being eaten away by the electrolosis of it setting in the water. Its an anti-corrosion anode. It does not have anything to do with the boats handling.
There are several anodes on most outboards and stearndrives..

does your motor stay in the water or is it trailered. if trailered don't worry, unless you are in salt water. just a good wash down after use.

Ship..., The anode on those old Mercs fits above and behind the prop and helps counter the torque from the motor to make the steering easier. In fresh water they will last a long time.

Anodes are used as a sacrificial hunk of metal.
The theory is that the hunk of zinc will "absorb" and sacrifice its self before the other metals on your boat.
If it disappears, then the corrosion will take place on other parts of your boat in the water.

Make sure you get the fresh water anode, the saltwater anode will not protect you in fresh water or vice-versa.
