Gentlemen
I purchased my F115 new in 2003. I followed engine break-in guidelines to the letter. Oil was black as coffee when I took it in for the 10 hour service.
Oil was black after 20 and 25 hours. Spark plugs are black with dry carbon deposits. Dealer's mechanic could not find anything wrong. He did a compression test and leak down test after 25 hours and everything was withing specs. Yamaha instructed the dealer to change the rings. The engine now has 87 hours and the black oil persits. No grit in the oil, it's just black. Spark plugs are black. The area around my prop exhaust also has black carbon stains on it. I kept calling Yamaha about this problem up until my warranty expired and all they told me was this might be just a characteristic of my engine. They say nothing wrong with black oil.
Another apparent characteristic of my engine (perhaps the two are related) is an annoying screeching noise that occurs after running the engine hard (W.O.T.) for 20-30 minutes. The noise becomes apparent when I power down just before shifting it into neutral. Once in neutral the noise disappears.
To me the noise is similar the sound an electric motor makes when the bearings are shot.
I've taken my boat to two Yamaha Outlets in Saskatchewan and neither of them has been able to solve these issues. I have an appointment with another this coming Wednesday. What should I have them check?
Could the black oil be the result of an overfueling problem?
I burn regular 87 octane gasoline in this engine.
Thanks Alot For Any Help You Can Provide
Cheers
