Yamaha F115 Oil is Black After 5 Hours

Gentlemen
I purchased my F115 new in 2003. I followed engine break-in guidelines to the letter. Oil was black as coffee when I took it in for the 10 hour service.
Oil was black after 20 and 25 hours. Spark plugs are black with dry carbon deposits. Dealer's mechanic could not find anything wrong. He did a compression test and leak down test after 25 hours and everything was withing specs. Yamaha instructed the dealer to change the rings. The engine now has 87 hours and the black oil persits. No grit in the oil, it's just black. Spark plugs are black. The area around my prop exhaust also has black carbon stains on it. I kept calling Yamaha about this problem up until my warranty expired and all they told me was this might be just a characteristic of my engine. They say nothing wrong with black oil.

Another apparent characteristic of my engine (perhaps the two are related) is an annoying screeching noise that occurs after running the engine hard (W.O.T.) for 20-30 minutes. The noise becomes apparent when I power down just before shifting it into neutral. Once in neutral the noise disappears.
To me the noise is similar the sound an electric motor makes when the bearings are shot.

I've taken my boat to two Yamaha Outlets in Saskatchewan and neither of them has been able to solve these issues. I have an appointment with another this coming Wednesday. What should I have them check?

Could the black oil be the result of an overfueling problem?
I burn regular 87 octane gasoline in this engine.

Thanks Alot For Any Help You Can Provide
Cheers

Greetings Walleye Warrior

The black oil is a little harder to figure out but the screeching noise sounds like a drive shaft bushing. Have the dealer call Yamaha--if it is the bushing then Yamaha will usually cover this under warranty especially since the motor only has 87hrs.

I think it's the driveshaft bushing.
You can spray some WD-40 or something like that to the driveshaft from the hole under the bottom cowling where you can see the driveshaft.

Here is a picture of the upper casing, bush part no. 21.

At this point i would send a oil sample out for and oil analysis

This will tell you if it is fuel or metal or whatever

Thanks for chiming in Admiral, I appreciate the input. I've saved oil samples for this purpose, but where do I send them?

If you just google oil analysis you will find many places

My WAG is that it is running very rich or never getting warm enough ?

Re: Yamaha F115 Oil is Black After 5 Hours

As you've read in my first post, I had a service appointment booked for last Wednesday. The mechanics finally got to my rig today and informed me that the screeching noise was indeed the drive shaft bushing. Bang on with the diagnosis Carribbean Soul and The Fin, thanks. As far as the oil problem goes, they agree with the Rear Admiral, I should have it analyzed. They said the plugs were not as bad (black) as I described them to be. They are still working on the repair. I will be really disappointed if Yamaha doesn't cover some of the cost despite the expired warranty. I've been reporting and documenting these problems since my first oil change. If it is an over fueling issue whats causing it........fuel pump..faulty computer? She's a mystery boyz!

Since the boat will now be in the shop over the weekend (waiting for driveshaft bushing) I will have them check out the thermostat.
Thanks again!
