I have a 1981 Mercury 85 hp outboard with the trim mechanism located inside the boat. I never have problems with the motor but the Trim mechanism causes me seasonal grief. Is there a way to disconnect the hydraulic system from the motor so I can pull it up and down manually? The trim mechanism is a system "A" type... one solenoid for up and down movement.

The control valve under the trim motor should have a manual release (knurled knob).

Hi.

thanks for the reply, I have disengaged the trim motor with the knob, but the motor is still locked in the position it was last in so I can't haul it up or down. Is draining the cylinders the only option?

Craig, The manual release only allows the motor to be lifted up by hand. If it was pumped up using the trim, it will not go down. Only choice is to loosen one of the small hudraulic hoses and let some oil out. The OB will then drop down.
