Re: Hot foot cold starting???

1. pump primer bulb until firm
2. open tank vent if so equipped
3. lift hi-idle lever to full up position
4. push key in and hold while turning key to "start" position until engine starts

use the hi-idle lever for warm-up - it just advances the spark without opening the throttle plates until the last 10% or so of travel, opens the throttles just a tiny bit.

Lets try this again, I have a hot foot I am thinking about using on my boat my question is how do i cold start my boat. I won't have a warm up lever if i do install the hot foot.

Pump the primer bulb till its hard, open the tank vent if there is one and then give it some gas with the hot foot if you don't have a fast idle lever. Just don't floor it or anything.

Re: Hot foot cold starting???

you won't have a hi-idle lever? all the boats I've ever seen with hotfoots (hotfeet?) installed still have the control box...lots a stuff in the control box besides just the throttle. How will you shift gears? [btw, not tryin to be a smarta55, ok, maybe just a little, but seriously, are you replacing everything in the control box, like the keyswitch, overtemp horn, neutral safety switch, shift lever, etc?]

without the hi-idle lever you'll have to push the pedal far enough down to get max spark advance, but not all the way down.

Had a shoe on my old Merc XS150. You are just going to have to sit and squeeze the shoe and the keep at the choke until it will stay running. The "high idle Lever" now is your right foot

Re: Hot foot cold starting???

Raising the fast idle lever will do nothing to the timing since the throttle cable controls both timing and throttle opening and its now connected to the hot foot, not the control box. You need to start the engine the same way you used to start a non-fuel injected car -- hold the gas pedal part way down, pull the choke and crank it up -- except here you push the key in to choke it. If the car had a manual throttle cable, you pulled it out a little to warm it up. But then I suspect most folks here aren't old enough to know that. :)

Just got done tossing a 140hp on a 16 foot flatbottom. This will be a right side hand throttle for now, with a trim switch on the wheel for control... still like a "shoe', but I'm having enough trouble on this one (LOW freeboard!) just getting my legs stretched out under the dash! It will see a H/S soon though...just getting it figured out after a winter pickup of the bare hull, and the Merc is a crank up rebuild..getting it wet for the first time Monday...good 3-4 hours breakin on muffs and tank time..A pic..(S/T...no prob on posting..and I darn sure remember the manual warm ups...!!)
