Re: Grass cutting

We've had so much rain at The Hideout this spring that the grass is trying to get in a year of growth in a couple of weeks. I guess that's because we have had more than a year worth of rain since early April.

Takes three sessions to mow the part I keep mowed. By the time I finished the last few acres the first few were shin high again. :(

I am not complaining. I am just afraid we won't have any more rain 'til next spring.

Re: Grass cutting

You get a time off??

In Perth I'm mowing every 10 days September to March and 3 weekly March to May and August. I get a break in winter (June, July) when it'll go 4 weeks.

I mowed 5 times this year so far. Call me crazy, but I find it relaxing. I enjoy yard work and take pride in our yard.

Yes, we get time off from mowing in VT......... we are normally shoveling snow, putting down chloride or spreading sand.............. Winter's are our longest season and we all look forward to out 2 week summer.

Re: Grass cutting

It was pretty hot up there when I visited! I guess that must have been 1 of your 2 weeks! LOL!

I cut the grass 2 times before I left for Ghana. Wife just told me she had the mower out yesterday! YIKES! I know she has to mow it, but I am scared - I will be fixing the yard up when I get home ... she would do a good job if she realized it was a tractor, not a go-cart or race car! She loves the zero turn capability and has entirely too much fun at the expense of the yard! HA!

Re: Grass cutting

The grass woke up from dormancy in the begining of March, because it actually rained -- the ONLY rain we've had since. It needed cuttin, so I cut it once last month and just yesterday. My problem isn't cutting the grass ,as much as it is keeping the dinosaur mower runnin. I swear (openly when under that machine), that 1990 YardMan 42" rider KNOWS when it will be pressed-into weekly service!! That POS! (place emoticon here)

This season, it was the obligatory drive belt, DB idler, and tensioner pulleys, and a gas cap that vommited it's desolved rubber diaphram into the fuel tank.. Complete removal and cleaning, and of course, new gas cap/fuel filter.
All I was going to do was change the oil, and that turned into an all-day, three-trip to TSC, 120buck chore... Sometimes, i swear tabooda, i want to just go into Home Depot, and plunk-down the plastic for a new future primadonna!
!@#$%
EDIT: I just read your post, Aspeck, and can relate.. Only I'm the "Dale Jr" round here.. My wife don't mow, and I don't cook (a little deal we have werked-out over the years, but that's another thread).. Anyhoo, last year, I smacked a tree (the "wall at Bristol" in my little saturday fantasies), and unknowingly bent the deck wheel at a 45 dregree angle. After seeing the resultant furrows, I pondered repair, or merely placing a seed dispensor on the trailer tongue. :)

Re: Grass cutting

I've cut mine about 4 times already. It needs it right now actually but we're doing the Mother's day thing all weekend. It's still wet from the rain yesterday anyway. I'll probably get to it tomorrow. I put two new blades on it last year and the belt is in good shape. The deck could use a good leveling as it's about a half a bubble off. I'd like to have a bagger, but the one made for mine (TroyBilt 42") is about $350. That's a lot to spend on a 8 year old mower. You wouldn't know it by looking at it though. I keep it pretty clean and never leave it out in the weather.

Re: Grass cutting

My neighbor has the answer,,,,,,,he accidently added Round-Up to his lawn sprayer,,,,,,,,,he now only has about 25% of his lawn to mow. (Finally my lawn looks better than his,,,,,,even with all my weeds)

I know last year about 7-10 days I would have to mow,,,,,,this season is about every 4-5 days. I blame it on all the rain, moderate temps, and increased CO2 in the atmosphere.

I converted my bagger to a mulcher this year. After bagging for 2 years I now no longer dread mowing!

Dang, between you and Flathead, from the Lawnmower Accident thread, we should start a lawnmower racing circuit. We could have divisions - Stock and Formula ... it could be fun - true redneck heaven! HA!

Oh wait, they already have that, don't they???? HEY, WATCH THIS!

Anybody else use one of these:
silent_reel_mower.jpg

silent reel lawn mower

Blade adjustment couple times a year......sharpen it with valve-lapping compound. Narrow width means more excercise for me ;) ......and it mulches, long as you don't mind going back over the lawn from another angle.

Re: Grass cutting

I have a two-year-old Cub Cadet with a 50 inch cut in the shop; the shop says that they are two weeks behind on their work. I thought I had that covered as I have two kickers, Kicker number one is a mid seventies Cub Cadet, with a 48 inch cut. Well?. it wont start, put in new plug and points still won?t start, hear noise coming from yard, look out don?t see anything, must be the grass growing from all of the rain we got the last two weeks. I get into a panic dig out the old Craftsman age unknown, with a 38 inch cut, charge up the battery, turn the key and here SCREEChhhh, from starter. Pull starter from craftsman, see the problem, the Bendix gear is stripped, went too the Sears warehouse bought the new gear for six bucks Sear parts salesman try?s to talk me into spending$124 bucks on a new starter with the new Bendux, this beast isn?t worth $124 dollars. Put new gear on went out and realized why I hadn?t use the old mower in years, in addition to it being a real butt buster, it pulls to the one side, and it spot plows as well. If the New Cub isn?t done this week guess I will have too put forty-dollars in the old Cub for a new coil, that?s about the only thing I haven?t replaced on it. I now have a new noise coming from growing grass with a new sound; the dreaded NUTGRESS chiming in. panic is starting set in,:(

Don't want to wish you bad luck,,,,,but I got a 2000 model Cub that is purely a POS. Been that way since new. Cut my lawn 5 times so far...

1st time,,,,battery dead
2nd time,,,,front tires quit holding air
3rd time,,,,,realized that blades are beating the grass instead of cutting
4th time,,,,couldn't keep blades engaged
5th time,,,,,had to replace fuel line due to leaking in 3 places, takes 6' of hose

Seems like I have to crank the starter about 45 seconds before it even fires.
Good luck with yours.

My old 72 Cub still starts on first hit and is a powerhouse compared to the MTD Cub. Just wish I had a good deck for it.

Re: Grass cutting

All Sears plow, you can't get the deck level. MTD, tires won't hold air, battery is a pos, monkey wards sucks.. they all suck, unless you have a perfectly level yard, and spend $4500 for a zero turn, which my yard would destroy, so every 5 years, I am buying a $900 lawn mower, and have only replaced the blades each year, after mulching the oak leaves.
