spring or no spring ?

1985 Mercury 90hp inline 6 cyl. serial #OA123801. Seloc book states there may or may not be a compression spring for the cam follower in the gear housing (propeller shaft). If there is in mine,the spring must be stuck inside the propeller shaft. need to know for sure. Thanks

go to mercurypartsexpress.com and look up your engine diagram. that's why we recommend the OEM factory manual.

Dave, I had thought all shifters using cams would have to have a spring. What does www.dougrussell.com exploded part diagrams say about it?

If you have one, it will be inside the prop shaft, behind the shift dog, and held in by some cross pin, through the dog.

Thanks for the response, I thought maby I lost the spring, but I did not take out the shift dog. I think the three bearings behind the cam follower came out inside the lower end when I took shaft out. Having problems getting the splines to line up right on shift rod to upper assembly. Thanks again
