I have (2) new in the box 1973 Merc 402's. I have new gas tanks, controls, and hoses. What (if any) maintenance is required before starting these motors? What would these motors be worth? I have seen similar questions in the forum, but not for motors this old. I appreciate any feedback given.

You might take a look at the FAQ section on the first page of the forums - there's a post about "awakening a sleeping outboard" that may be of help.

I'm betting that anything rubber or pliable plastic is going to be in trouble - waterpump, hoses, and probably wire coatings.

As for value, they are worth more untouched than as running motors. They're only brand new once - once you run them, they're just another used motor...
