I've been struggling with this motor (1963 Evinrude 40 hp Lark with electric shift) for most of last summer and the battle has started up again this spring.
Last year I dealt with carb issues, starter solenoid, wiring, helicoil repair to cyl head, etc etc. Finally got it running, blew lower unit seals on test run
This spring did lower unit seals, impeller, found out starter was shot so replaced it. Motor now starts but has an extremely high idle (which is strange because it idled fine last summer).
What's my best strategy to get the idle down? I don't want to put it into gear at such a high idle, right?
Any danger to playing around with the carb adjustments with a high idle on earmuffs?
The person who changed out the starter thought that one of the gaskets (intake manifold??) might have been damaged when the starter bolts were removed. If there was an air leak there would it cause a high idle? If so, any way to repair with sealant without removing the carb and/or starter?
Need to get this motor running well since I've now invested a bunch of $$$ in it!!
thanks
Marc.
