i 've a gm305 228 1978.When it warms up the oil press reaches the 60.Is it bad or normal? What problems the oil press may mean above normal? When it warns about something?

After the engine warms up it reaches 60, At what RPM??

What are the cold readings???

What viscosity of oil are you using????

I'm sure that a lot of people wish that they had 60.

Thanks for replying,
The existing oil is for diesel engines i m not sure, i think is 40, as soon as i ll check it i ll let you know
When the engine is cold the needle is at the center(40)

I'm hoping maybe Don or someone more knowledgeable can pick up on this but I'm fairly sure having pressure that high can be a bad thing as well.
There are reasons why on marine engines you should not use high volume oil pumps however I'm not sure these two would be related.

Re: what oil press indicates?

Two things:

1) At the same RPM the same viscosity oil should give you higher oil pressure at the colder temp and vice versa. As the temperature increases nornally the oil pressure drops off slightly. If it's doing the opposite it might indicate a sender or gauge problem.

2)However, most of the of the instruments on 90% of the boats I'm familiar with utilize electric gauges and again most do not install a regulated voltage to the gauges. Therefore it is possible that as the voltage increases once the engine starts all the gauges will read slightly higher. The only way to really be sure is to hook-up a manual gauge directly where the existing sending unit is.

In any event 60 PSI is not excessive and should not present any problems. I wish mine maintained a true 60 PSI.

Good luck!

Re: what oil press indicates?

during replacement of intake manifold gasket i made a damage to the pressure valve because i tried to turn it from its body and not the nut under its body.I ordered a new one ,it was a little different, I put it on and to my surprise the press it counted was the half. From 25 PSI to 40PSI with the engine cold. Using the nut of the old one i adjusted on it a pressure gauge to connect directly to the engine so i learn finally what the press was.The result is the first valve wasn't saying the truth. The mechanics told me thet each sender matches with a specific gauge. Now i don't warry for high pressure but for low!
