hello,
i have an older pontoon boat with a 50 hp johnson, and i wanna use the small ted williams for just a kicker or a back up. the ted williams motor i have is missing the carb, i was thinking of taking like a 5 hp lawnmower engine in and just mounting it in the housing. it looks like the motor in it has the same bolt pattern, does anyone know if this will work.

It probably has a Tecumseh powerhead, but I've never seen that powerhead used on any lawnmower. Tecumseh lawnmower bases are about a foot round. Tecumseh outboard powerhead bases are rectangularish and only about 3x5. The other big problem would be that a lawnmower crank isn't going to have a splined hole in it for the driveshaft.

Check compression and spark on that 7.5. If they're both good, then watch eBay for a carburetor...they show up quite frequently there. Carb kits are readily available, so clean and kit that carb before trying it.

On those Tecumseh two stroke engines, if they have spark and compression and a clean carb, they'll run.

Trouble with them is that they're noisy, they vibrate a lot, and they're generally a PITA on a boat. Also, they use a different type of oil than your other outboard, which means a separate tank.

The best use for those outboards is as a cheapo spare motor to keep around so you can go fishing if your Johnnyrude is in the shop or waiting for parts.
