magneto ground wire

I have a 1959-61 35 hp Mercury Thunderbolt motor that I took off an old boat and am trying to figure out the wiring to stop the engine. I have traced out the ground wire to the magneto, but don't know which terminal on the starter switch to connect it to. There are three terminals on the switch. It appears that one of them is an accessory terminal.
If any one out there can help, Please let me know. I will be greatly appreciated

Re: magneto ground wire

Are you sure that is a magneto switch? Three terminal sounds like a battery ign system, if so it will destroy the mag

Re: magneto ground wire

Take a wire from the side of the mag, run it to a push button kill switch, and then from the other terminal of the kill switch to a ground on the engine..

That will kill your eninge, but remember you must hold that button in until the engine completely stops. I have a '56 Mercury Mark55e, '1957 Mercury Mark 30, I stop both engines in the same manner

Re: magneto ground wire

I have installed a toggle switch with a cover that has to be lifted to start and closed to ground the magneto. Thanks for your input though.
I was trying to avoid doing that. When I first got the boat that this motor was on I did not have to use a separate switch, but that was over seven years ago and my memory isn't the best when it comes to things like this.
