850 lower unit will not come off. All nuts and bolt "have" been removed. Done the forward/reverse thing, wedges, 5lb hammer and block of wood. Two of the nuts closest to shaft can also be used to help push down lower unit by putting 1/8th inch metal plate above them and winding them off against leg, this alone puts a great amount of force on things. Hung it upside down, poured penetrent down shaft for a week and repeated the process all over again, still won't budge.

As a last resort can I cut through leg, from the front, about half way up. Just enough to go through shaft. Remove lower unit and leg. Maybe then crank can be supported, something welded to remainder of shaft so a slide hammer can be used on it. Weld up cut in leg and replace shaft.

Only other thing I could do is to put it on boat and take it for a run, maybe that would loosen it.

Or should I use it for an anchor.

Dave, You could disassemble the gearcase and remove the nut on the bottom of the driveshaft. Then after the pump body cracks, the lower will come off. You can then pull the powerhead with the driveshaft still attached.

You did get the bolt under the zinc trim tab. right?

Then after the pump body cracks

Chris, thanks for the reply, what I wanted to hear.

Yes got the bolt under trim tab.

I guess when you say "cracks" you mean breaks from beating down on lower unit. If so, is this a sure way doing it and how difficult is it to break pump?

You got the bolt under the tab, and the nut up front?

Dave, When I referred to the water pump cracking, I meant when the pump cracks to allow the driveshaft to pass thru it. I think the upper bearing on the driveshaft will stay on the shaft and force the pump base and cover to break into several pieces.

I phoned a couple of local outboard people about problem. They both say you will not pull shaft through pump and the way to do it is to cut shaft as I mentioned. I was also told to not waste my time and money on it.

With all respect, you need to be sure of these things before you go at it with a big hammer.

Anchor it is.
