Re: Stay away from OMC motors and sterns?

I have to disagree with that complete idiot Achris. ;)

An outboard of the same horsepower will tend to be a smidge faster than a sterndrive. Maybe 5mph at most. No big deal. But I think the sterndrive has the edge on low end grunt.

Sorry Achris, couldn't resist. :D

Re: Stay away from OMC motors and sterns?

Read this site before you buy. It talks about the issues with the shift cable and the clutch dogs:

http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/

There is no adapter between the OMC Cobra and the Mercruiser. You can pull the whole Cobra system out and put a Mercruiser in because the transom hole is the same.

Amazing how many people comment on the Cobra without even owning one. I had a Cobra for 12 years. Went through a bunch of shift cables...had the clutch dogs replaced under warranty when the boat was new because of a mis adjusted shift cable...no other problems.

I sold mine because I wanted a bigger boat. I made sure I didn't get a OMC Cobra because of future parts issues and I wanted a Volvo with a cone clutch. Mercruiser dog clutch was also out of the question for me.

Mr Mahler,

Try this website http://www.mercruiserparts.com/partsByNumber.asp

Part number for OMC to Mercruiser adaptor plate is -827691A1. You can even see a picture of it. So you can now junk that obselete white dinasour of yours and get a real engine!

....................

This plate is for the OMC stringer drive....not for the OMC Cobra which is the topic of this thread.

Just make sure you fill the gearlube up into the upper drive when you change it. A lot of newbies just fill the lower gearcase the first time they change it.

There is no upper or lower gearcase as far as filling the gear lube goes. It is all one cavity. You do need to make sure you fill from the center instead of the bottom like a Mercruiser.

Bruce, you probably missed it in Chris's last post that he was not able to see pictures at his present location, so had no idea it was a Cobra drive and not a stringer.
Guess that's why Chris is a "Complete Idiot", unlike myself who is only an idiot on special occasions. ;) :p :p :D

Ok...I understand his post then. Glad I didn't call him a "Complete Idiot".

Don...I think I have the same affliction as you!.

I own a Stringer and that plate does not look anything like my opening.

That's because the plate bolts up to the transom and therefore will be bigger than the hole. Have faith my son, they work.....

well now mr willyb you sir are being the complete idiot i said quite clearly that horsepower was the same i even gave reasons why 2 similar boats one with an outboard and the other with a stern drive would give different results but you are sooooo thick you didn't see it couldn't resist myself either the completely idiot chris

(Just count yourself lucky I used the space bar!!) :D

Didn't mean to offend, Chris. That was meant as a good-natured jab as well as something of an admonishment to the poster that called you that. That's why Mr Winky's there.

Bruce, you seem to have a problem understanding posts here. I said you have to fill up into the upper cavity. I didn't say you have to fill the upper cavity separately as you apparently assume. I've replaced or rebuilt a lot of Cobra upper ends because first-time do-it-yourselfers tend to fill it like an outboard from the bottom til it comes out the side screw of the lower half and neglect to get lube UP INTO the upper portion.

1900 Cobra is clearly a Typo. Probably a 1990, or even a 1999 or 1988 or such. Let's not get hypercritical here. Save that for Dockside. ;)

What Model Year OMC's will that Adaptor work with?

Absolutely no offence taken old chap. I was merely responding in kind. :D
(Hence the uncapitalize, unpunctuated chain sentence.)

Cheers,

This is what you said:

I assumed you know how to do it. Just clarifying it for the original poster.

You do know that you fill from the middle hole right?

1900 Cobra is clearly a Typo. Probably a 1990, or even a 1999 or 1988 or such. Let's not get hypercritical here.

I wasn't being critical. It was actually just a question.

Ya, I know Chris says it will work... but... My opening is not oblong... it's more square

Same here. I guess it comes down to the overall dimensions of the Adaptor. The height looks like it may cover top to bottom. I would be interested in the width of it. Have to admit, it is a tad pricey.
