My Evinrude 40hp 1984 BE40ELCR will not engage into reverse? it goes in with muffs on, but when in water just makes noise, I have adjusted cable etc but no luck, it appears that not much is stopping it going in, when reverse is selected the linkage on engine can still be moved about 1/2" play is on cables which is to long, would shorter cables help, stupid question but why does it go in on muffs but not in water? thanks for help. Re: Reverse problem!

there is no pressure on muffs, there is resistance in the water. disconnect the shift cable and manual shift it in the water. if it works, then put engine and shifter in neutral. adjust the trunion nut so you can slip the connector on without, moving the linkage on the motor. if it doesn't work replace the cable.

Re: Reverse problem!

By any chance did the unit shift properly in the past, then the lower unit was removed for some reason, then this problem popped up? If so, it's possible that the brass shift connector isn't aligned exactly where it should be.

The 1/2" play you mention..... that would cause problems in trying to have the shift evenly adjusted. It would be a good idea to find out just where that play exists and correct it.

When all is as it should be, the proper method to adjust the shift cable is to disconnect the cable from the engine. Move the shift linkage on the engine to find the center of the play in neutral, and when found, leave it centered.

Now, grab the end of the shift cable sleeve, push and pull it to find the center of the play there, and center that play.

Adjust the trunion on the threaded portion of the shift cable so that the centered play of the cable lines up with the centered play of the engine's shift linkage. Install and lock the shift cable with the retaining clamp in that position. That's it.
