Hard to get it running. yesterday I took the boat out of storage, Checked everything like you normally would. Took the battery out of my 1991 Chevy s-10, hooked it up to the boat. And the motor cranks Hard... And i had to have somebody holding the throttle open a bit to get it to start.. It would just sputter on its own.. So we got it Running, Idles Great after that. But when we tried to open the thrrotle it would sputter and sometimes stall and then it sometimes would rev up. So we did the 50 gallon Drum trick. I'm Sure you know what im talking about.. Fill the 50 gallon drum with water.. get the motor in the drum.. anyway. we had it running reving it up.. about 10 minutes of that it stalled we tried to restart it and the battery seemed dead. (we cleaned all connections... sprayed wih wd-40) I took the battey and put it in the S-10.. and the S-10 Fired right up. So whats up with that?

WD-40 will do a lot of things, but it won't clean corroded connections.

Go to the Engine FAQs and look at starter circuit troubleshooting in "Outboard won't start".

Good luck. ;)

Well, I meant we cleaned the connections with a Wire Brush and then sprayed everything with WD-40..

Ugh, Everything Checks out... Everythings Good. I Took out the Spark Plugs and Cranked it over, and boy did she whirl over. So i put the plugs back in and tried to start it and it did one of those Slow compression kicks.. No way does it crank fast enough to start. It couldnt be a rod bearing gone bad could it?

Sounds like it needs a good checkup. Compression check, spark check, etc. I'm sure there is a lot out of sync with the timing. Carbs are probably gunked too.

Re: 1978 Evinrude 55HP

I boosted the battery with the Camaro. And it Whirled over pretty Fast. I set the Throttle at about 1/16 open and it started up up instantly.

BUT, Anywhere under 1/4 throttle it seems to have a few hiccups/Sputters and kicks around a bit. but anything above 1/4 throttle, Its like new. Has New spark plugs in it.. I took them out and they are the same color. A bit brown to a blackish color.. Not fouled.. I have a timing light.. I might try checking that.. Oh yea, It idles great but when you try to open the throttle it sputters a bit, but if you fling it over 1/4 throttle its mint.. So is it the carbs?
I Checked out the FAQ and I think I might Take the carbs off, and get some Seafoam, That stuffs like 6 bux a can now..
