Hello,

when running at high speed the motor chokes out but when you slow down it runs fine.

Thanks

So? You think it's the vacuum cut-out switch? Probably not. It's not even supposed to be operational at high throttle settings, unless somebody has been dinking with the wireing.

Could be an issue in the high speed jet circuit in the carb... has any carb work been done on it recently? If not it might need a cleaning / carb kit...

Has any work been done on the ignition? All 1958 Johnsons have bad coils unless they have already been replaced.

No, we just got the motor from the father-in-law. He said it was serviced. I did remove a wire from the throttle gears. The motor would not start with it on there. I took the wire and grounded it and she started right up.

Are you talking about a electric start engine with a mercury switch on the throttle gear? Grounding that would let you use the electric starter. It has nothing to do with the ignition.

I just want to know how to bypass the vacuum cut-out switch.

Thanks

i have the same engine, i believe this will solve you problem. http://www.iboats.com/bbboard/bbBoard.cgi?a=viewthread;fid=28;gtid=818798;gpid=818802e

if you must just disconnect the wire on the center, and put a piece of tape on it so it won't ground. but that's not the problem, and replace it so you don't get a runaway engine, and blow it up.

Re: 58 35hp sea horse vacuum cut-out switch bypass

The mercury switch/wire from the throttle gears does two things:

1. It completes the ground circuit for the starter solenoid. That is to prevent starting with the throttle set too high. By grounding it, you defeated it's purpose and now it will start with a wide-open throttle (in gear) and run over the dock ....or person.

2. It completes the ground circuit for the vacuum cut-out switch. That is so that the switch is grounded and operates only at slow throttle settings. By grounding it, you defeated it's purpose and now the vacuum cut-out switch can operate at any speed, especially at "cruise throttle" settings when there is a high vacuum.

However, go back and read my previous comment about bad coils. You are wasting your time till you establish their condition, good or cracked.

i agree if you haven't had the flywheel off your wasting time. i just reconditioned mine. starts 1 bump of the starter without choke.
