Mixing new fuel with old?

Is it ok to add new fuel to a half full tank of stablized ethanol gas? I'e heard that doing so can cause a phase separation that would glog the fuel filter. Should I burn off more of the tank's fuel first or add high octane now. The tank is an internal "poly" type. So far the engine is running smoothly, I'd planned to change the filter after the first tankfull.

I guess the first question I would ask is how long the fuel has been sitting there.

If it's less than a year I would just add regular gas to it and run it.

Adding high octane will not make much difference.

Thanks for the reply.
The fuel has been there since end of Sept, about 8 months. It was stabilized. A neighbor said he heard a friends tank had to be cleaned out to prevent "phase seperation" before filling up.

Much to do about nothing.... add fuel and go boating. ;)

Thanks! Will fill up and run this weekend and change the filter after the next tank. Will look for any water in the old filter.
