Broken 175

[Boston Habba]

It's a 1986 175 hp. Running along today at about 3500 RPM -no obvious problem. It gives a couple of shakes and rattles and dies. Frozen. Can turn the crank with a wrench about 1/4 turn in either direction and then a clank and no further. Going to pull the power head, crack the case a see what's broken. Any guesses before I go to all the work?

Bummer

Drop the lower unit first, to be sure that's not it. Could be a frozen driveshaft bearing.

Take the plugs out and peer into the holes. A nasty aluminum powder coated plug, or obvious piston damage should be evident if it's in the head.

You can pull the carbs and reed block off also and get a peek at the crankcase end of things before you pull the power head off.

Probably a connecting rod let go from the crankshaft. Did you check the block for a hole somewhere?

I don't see hole or a rod sticking out.
Plugs look clean.

Good advice to pull reed block for a look.

Never thought about lower unit. I'll drop it and see what happens.

My bet is on the rod coming loose.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Ok I pulled the reed block and found that the rod came off the crank, Found a broken rod bolt, a chunk on the end cap, pieces that look like the piston skirt and some slag. I'm going to pull the power haed for a good look. Probably need a cam shaft (Can they be machined or do I need a new (good used one)?, new rod and piston and bore and sleeve cylinder. That's if I'm lucky!

Oh man just JB weld it back together...

JK, that sucks, they do reman cams cut i think your best bet is to go used or new, but if a rod broke and you found chunks, dont you need a crank, liners (and pistons, rings) and bearings?

No question that the crank is shot along with piston, cylinderwall etc. Beginning to wonder if it's worth fixing. It has been run pretty hard and spent its life in salt. Maybe it's time to look into a "new to me" engine and part this one out.
