Which oil?? Should I believe the marina, mechanic, or manufacturer?

I have twin 1990 Evinrude 225HP engines that I have been told to use 3 different types of oil. I used to use the purple oil but a friend of mine moved from an Evinrude FICHT to a Mercury engine and had about 40 gallons left in his 55 gallon drum of FICHT oil so I called Evinrude (Bombardier) and asked if I could use FICHT oil in my older outboards. The sales guy transferred me to a Tech Engineer, he told me that I should be using FICHT oil as it burns much cleaner than the older purple oil. He also said I could mix the two with no issues. I used the FICHT oil until I used up the rest of the drum.

Three years ago I took the boat in to have the engines looked at because they had been smoking a lot and when at idle they would stall out regularly. The mechanic told me the problem was with the FICHT oil, it was thinner than the old purple oil so the VRO pumps were regulated to pump the thicker (higher viscosity) oil and was pumping to much oil into the cylinders causing the engines to smoke more and run rough at idle. I switched back to the purple oil and the smoking and idle problem went away.

This spring after I emptied all three of my 2 1/2 gallon of purple bulk oil containers I dropped them off at a local marina who is an Evinrude dealer. I told the guy which engines I had and when I went back to pick up the filled containers I noticed the oil was now green. I asked the parts guy why they weren't filled with the purple oil and he had the mechanic come to the parts counter to talk to me. This mechanic (not the same one that told me to use the purple oil) told me I should be using the green oil, one is XD30 and other is XD50 but I don't recall which color is which. I told the mechanic that the factory told me I should be using FICHT but I had problems with this oil, he agreed that the FICHT oil wouldn't cause any damage but I should be using the green oil.

I filled up my oil reservoirs that were half full of purple oil with now the green oil, I'm hoping there wasn't a problem mixing them because I didn't ask about the mechanic about mixing the purple with the green. I didn't notice anything different with the engines yesterday and I ran about 25 miles and everything seemed fine.

Can anyone tell me which is the right oil I should be using?? What color is XD50 and XD30 and what is the difference between the two??

Thanks, Russ

This post is bound to bring a lot of replies. They will range from oil manufacturer, moon phases, favorite color, and what my brother inlaw told me, as told to him, by a second cousin from a previous marriage. Why not use tw-3? That is what they used when it was new.

Good evening all.
The manufacturers design and build the motors and they should know what is right ? I run a 225hp vro Evenrude 1999 model and use what is available to us here in South Africa , which is Quick Silver TCW3 rated under gaurantee periods I would use what ever the manufacturer recomends after that I would run the best possible two stroke oil available.
kind regards William Wright

Your engines require TCW3 specification oil. Doesn't matter if its conventional coil, semi-synthetic, or full synthetic. If the oil is not rated TCW3 do not use it. Simple as that. XD30 oil is red. I think XD50 is green.

The only oil I run is Evinrude oil, the FICHT, XD30 & XD50 are all Evinrude oils. If there is no difference than why did the FICHT oil cause my engines to smoke excessively and idle rough? If there is no difference in the 3 types of oil, why are they named differently and have different prices?

Nobody said there was no difference. All that's been said is that you must use an oil, any oil, that meets the minimum TC-W3 specification. There are many formulations on the market and they're all different. But they must have met NMMA's TC-W3 specification for them to display that certification.

Not going to bore you with my pedigree, but you have to look at the facts.

If the pump is viscosity rated then viscosity is important. It doesn't know if the oil is TCW rated or not, and if so, to what degree...TCW, TCW1 etc, whether it's for an OMC Ficht or a Merc racer.

Viscosity rating means that it is sensitive to pressure which will vary widely as the temp varies; the higher the viscosity, the more the variation with temp; especially cold where the higher viscosities go out of site rapidly. I really doubt that the pumps are built like that.

However, if like a lot of pumps, it is volume related and volume changes much less with temp than viscosity. You have this little scoop and it scoops up whatever is in the tube; or you have this set of rotating cylinders and they roll by the tube (don't touch the contents) and roll through the tube whatever's in it...by volume.

Sooooo. You need to know the pump type before you get hung up on whether it is 10W or 50W.

As far as who to believe, my experience is that you have to look at the background and economic position of who's talking.

The OEM has governmental regulations to satisfy and keeping the lawyers at bay.

The local mechanic is the guy that's trying to make it happen....maybe he's experienced, maybe not.....you need to know. He knows what works for him, not necessarily has the right answers for you.

The guy at the parts counter is selling parts. (No offense intended but he is selling parts...if he is experienced you do good; if a novice, run....but you don't necessarily know that with your initial confrontation).
