I just purchased a repo boat powered by a Yamaha 90. I did all research possible prior but couldn't locate the previous owner to find out what actually happened. Anyway, the lower unit was lying in the back of the boat with the prop shaft assembly fully intact but lying beside the gear case. The gears look fine but the prop shaft bearing housing (carrier) is cracked and the big carrier nut that holds the assembly in the lower housing is not round/concentric plus the threads are rolled. The gear assembly appears to have been forced/blown out of the housing, not disassembled. One other thing I noticed is that the drive shaft won't turn. The prop, lower unit and skeg look fine with no visible damage whatsoever. Matter of fact, the skeg still has 95% of the factory paint.

questions: 1. What could have caused this? Moisture/freezing?
2. If the gear case is good, cheaper to rebuild the lower unit or should I just consider replacing with a rebuilt?
Thanks in advance

Sounds like it froze. Best bet is a good used or rebuilt. Housing is ruint and if water got into the inards, they are likely rust.

Thanks for the advice. Since I'm not familiar with Yamaha, I have a couple more questions. What family or group is this engine? IE, what HP sizes will interchange, what year models?

Thanks
