Re: merc 89 controls kill switch

I know that you need it. I am no expert but there is nothing to temporarily kill the engine to switch gears it will destroy your drive. Also, its extremely unsafe if you were to accidentily start it in gear, ie: other boaters, docks land, etc ;). Depending on your engine I have an 84 140 4 banger and its situated below my lower shift cable. If it was totally removed I don't know what to tell you other than the dealer I am guessing needs to replace it, mine was bent and had to replace it, apparently people will do that to get it to work right and it is better to just replace it they are not expensive. Others I am sure might be able to help more but I am guessing they will say that the dealer needs to fix that for you.

I may be a little confused here you said kill switch if you are referring to the cutoff switch up at the driver's area that shouldn't cause you to be able to start in any gear my guess is the shift interrupt switch.

Re: merc 89 controls kill switch

I really am not an expert on that. I do know when in a friends nautique a while back we went airborne in some rough water and the cutoff came off and it was a good thing because there were boats all around us ( holiday ) and if it hadn't killed it, we probably would have slammed into one of them and hurt ourselves and others and who knows what else. I don't see why a dealer would just say it is bad and not replace the stupid part. Seems unsafe to me. I would take it back.....I doubt it would pass a coast guard check or DNR, but I like I said am not an expert by any means. I don't know if this is a true marina or just a mechanic though so that would be your call on what you intend on doing.

That would be a Faulty Neutral Safety Switch.........

It's found Inside your Controller,......
It should make or break from the motion of the Shifter.......

The emergency kill switch that you hook a lanyard to and attach to yourself in case you fall overboard is a safety device. If it doesn't work, replace it. They go bad all the time. When bad they will not allow power to your coil so you have spark.
You can replace it yourself. IF they bypassed it, maybe it doesn't work. Hook it up and see if the engine will run. Is there anything actually broken on it? All it is is a switch and they can fail.

Del, that dealership is idiocity; they screw you over, and then jump the kill-switch? Don't they know about liability?

I Don't Know,..........

What I Do Know is,.........
You're talking about 2 seperate Switches........
Which Shouldn't be Related........

The Neutral Safety Switch Stops the Starter from engaging,........
The Safety Lanyard Switch, Kills the Ignition..........

Re: merc 89 controls kill switch

thanks bond-o don s summed it up. if i dont pay i am wrong . and cant win no matter what. he hacked boat up. i should try to fix it over the summer for next year and not worry about getting it in the water this year as i will be towed back in...i did not sleep well over stopping payment on this check as . i was just hoping that it ran good and had been close to put in water. he did alot of things to rush me out of the shop and not be safe. i did not want him to make me a new boat but get drive and engine perfect at any cost.so i could deal with the little b/s . blowers pumps etc. it just gets worse everytime i check it out more..
starts in gear . idles wrong. loops. will not idle unless i advance full throttle then back off and keep the gas advanced. i tryed adjusting the linkage screw. that would not help much. i know a fair amount about this motor..temp wires not conected right. when cranking starter motor has that weird chev sound like its not meshing right like it should.that wing...sound or wiss. basically i got boat back in worse cond then i droped it off basically ..but with my new motor installed..its an inprovement but not buy much. i am tired of whinning. all the wind is out of my sails. he screwed me so bad i am ready to get a jon boat with 6 gal tank...i have had at least 10+ boats first merc strern
thanks bondo
