I know that you need it. I am no expert but there is nothing to temporarily kill the engine to switch gears it will destroy your drive. Also, its extremely unsafe if you were to accidentily start it in gear, ie: other boaters,docks land, etc

. Depending on your engine I have an 84 140 4 banger and its situated below my lower shift cable. If it was totally removed I don't know what to tell you other than the dealer I am guessing needs to replace it, mine was bent and had to replace it, apparently people will do that to get it to work right and it is better to just replace it they are not expensive. Others I am sure might be able to help more but I am guessing they will say that the dealer needs to fix that for you.
