:eek:Sorry I started a 2nd thread but I messed up.. I have the seal kit for the lower unit.. I removed the seal on the drive shaft, located below the impeller. It was then I realized that seal is not included with the seal kit. Does anyone know the part # for the seal and if is still available. I've been told that old Chrysler parts will soon not be stocked by the manufacturer. Is this true? thanks

F474307. Not in the kit??? Somebody screwed-up packing the parts. Merc has been phasing-out Chrysler/Force parts since they bought them out. Sierra is your best source after Merc. Sierra is sold right here on iboats. 1978? Geez, that's been a common kit for a whole lotta years. :)

Even though some old Chrysler parts are no longer being stocked, these engines usually used stock parts for bearings and seals. For example: the top crankshaft bearing is the same bearing used in FORD rear end units. If you get in a bind, take the old part to your local bearing supply store and they should be able to order them for you. Look them up in the Yellow Pages under Bearings.

Bummer... I just took closer look....wrong pump kit & perhaps wrong seal kit; I have quicksilver seal kit # 26-820645a 1. and quicksilver FK1073 for the pump kit... pump housing holes do not line up with holes in L.U. Is the number you listed for the correct seal kit? Marinas are closed here now... won't get it going for the holiday family :(

The number I put up is for the seal under the water pump.

Re: Chrysler Model 559H8K

I have a 26-820645A 1 kit in front of me and it has the drive shaft seal in it. I have matched the seal to my 55hp lower unit (spare unit) and it is the correct part. Either the new kits are different or your lower unit is not an original for that motor. That kit should have everything you need for the lower unit except the seal between the lower and upper housings.

Re: Chrysler Model 559H8K

Part 60 water pump seal 26-F474736 should not have come with the seal kit. The two seals that come with the kit should be the prop seal 26-819396 part number 9 and part number 26-F474307l (part 54 in diagram). Are you saying the kit came with the water pump seal but not the driveshaft seal?

Re: Chrysler Model 559H8K

there are two seals on the drive shaft; one is under the impeller, the other is imbedded in top of pump housing; the two in kit are for the impeller housing and the prop shaft; i need the one under the impeller which is not in the kit... you gave me the part # for the one under the impeller; the seal that goes with the pump housing is included with the new pump kit already pressed into the pump housing, so I thought the 2nd seal in the seal kit was the seal under the impeller... and how do I remove the shift rod seal? do I need the separate the two piece L.U.? or would I be okay to leave the shift seal alone? thanks again for you help....

Re: Chrysler Model 559H8K

Manual says to separate both upper and lower parts of the gear housing. thread a 5/16 lag screw into the shift rod seal. Insert a 1/4inch diameter rod from the other end and press the seal and screw from the ghe gearcase.

Re: Chrysler Model 559H8K

I just got back from local marina.. he had the seal for under the impeller and the correct pump kit. he told me to not separate the L.U. , instead drill two small holes in top of shift rod seal, put in two small screws and using two pair of pliers gently pry up and rock the seal up thus avoiding the nightmare of putting the two halves back together and not to bother with the prop shaft seal. I never did see any oil dripping from the prop shaft. it's a good possibilty that my water leak was from the two blue gaskets on the drain/fill plugs. I have new gaskets for those plugs. Thanks for you help; The parts diagram is very helpful....:) When I get this back together and I still have a leak, I think I will take the lower unit into the shop and let them replace all the seals....

Re: Chrysler Model 559H8K

FYI. Most older motors will develop a wear spot right at the seal. You might notice one on your drive shaft where the seal is. A more common one is at the prop shaft when mono or the newer hybid fishing lines get caught there. If your drive shaft has either one of these problems it will pass a pressure test but still have a slight leak causing the oil to turn into a milkshake. My guess is you have not separated the bearing carrier from the lower unit. If in the future you detect a leak there you can still remove it and do the prop shaft seal without damaging anything you are doing now. At that time you can access the nut to remove the two lower units from each other. When doing this a service manual is priceless. Clymer is good or you can go to chrysler crew and buy a downloadable factory one to use with Adobe reader.
