Some early 888 questions

I was wondering if anyone knows a couple things? My early 1975 888 with the I drive seems to always have some sort of oddball problem I'm sure I could fix but the Clymer manual sucks when I look for the info on whatever I need. Can anyone tell me which manuals would be the best? What I mean is, which Mercruiser manuals are right for me?
Also wondering if anyone is familiar with the reverse lock valve? Mine seems to be leaking a bit of trim fluid. Does it have a seal in it? The fluid seems to be coming not from the hose connection but instead seems to be coming from the screws on top. I don't just want to start taking it apart until I know more about it and of course my Clymer manual barely acknowledges it's existance. And the other problem I have with this is, I don't want to take it apart before I know if I can get parts. Seems like a lot of what I look for lately is marked as NLA by Mercury. I can usually find it elsewhere but my local marina stores are not much help.
THANKS!!

What Ziggy said...
It does have a seal & the reverse lock valve is the pivot for the shift arm....
Your best bet for replacement would be to keep an eye out for a shiftplate of that era on ebay......
Preferably one that has the reverse lockout switch, which is N.L.A. as well........;)

Re: Some early 888 questions

yep, service manual #1 also covers the 888. though ya need vol. 1 and 2 of service manual #1 to cover the whole thing. drives and specs are in vol 2. engine stuff in vo. 1... that part # is c-90-68648, vol.s 1 and vol. 2.

only reason i think it's manual #2 ya need. is that i'm thinkin that service manual #2 started in 75. they look real similar in the info provided....... service manual #2 is only one book too. it covers all.....no volumes....

if ya provide yer serial # i'd think someone here would be able to tell ya for sure which way to go.

Re: Some early 888 questions

I had a link for the Merc Service manual breakdown. I think it had been saved back when all posted links opened thru an iboats cover. Now when I open it I just get the iboats main forum index.

Hopefully someone else will repost it.

'75-77 888's are covered in manual #2. It is the last Merc manual that has both engine and outdrive in one book. The part number, as Ziggy noted, is c-90-71707. You don't need manual #1.

Thanks everybody. Those part numbers are not coming up at mercury parts Express, but I suppose if I call them they'll know what I need.

Tipsy, keep an eye out on ebay. I got my #2 for about 18$ shipped.

Re: Some early 888 questions

One more possible request please,
would someone who has the #2 service manual please look up the "reverse lock valve" for me and give me a proper name and part number?
My local dealer was looking in his Mercury reference and could not find it at all and I thought if I at least had a name or number that might help me to track down the correct o-rings.
THANKS!
