Reverse problem

I'm stupmed, so hopefully I can pick your brains. 200 hp Evinrude o/b. Had some problems out of the water when put into reverse, would not shift into gear. Adjusted the cable linkage, making it a bit tighter, and then it would shift into gear w/out problem.

Put it in the water today, put it in reverse and it went forward. Put it in forward, and it went forward. So now, two forward gears, no reverse. Ideas? anyone have this happen to them before?

sound like the cables are reverse. either on the engine or in the controller. have someone else move the shifter. watch the engine, the shift cable should pull forward for forward , and push back for reverse. the throttle cable only moves one direction. depending on the engine it either pull forward to speed up or moves back to speed up.
