Another Ted Williams 7.5 question

I came across a complete TW 7.5 with a Tecumseh engine the other day, it seems to be in decent shape and don't seem to have had much use. It runs but the top crank seal leaks making it about imposible to get a good carb adjustment.
It's been sitting for at least 35 years from what I was told but was in good running order when stored. They did oil and store it well and it has excellent compression. I cleaned the carb and it fires on the first pull but I can here the seal weezing when I crank the engine, I noticed it while cleaning the ignition parts, (was full of dust and spider webs under the schroud).
This is the Eska made version. I also can't seem to find a gear shift or neutral on this motor? The prop seems connected full time to the motor? Did these use a centrifical clutch as on the later motors?
Where can I find parts? Although I don't really plan to use this on any particular boat, I just would like to have it ready to run as a spare.

I also notice that these are an odd shaft length, not really a 15" and not really a 20". It measures about 18.5" from the anticavitation plate to hanging bracket top. It sort of looks like they comprimised to make it usable on either transom height? Its a bit long for a 15" transom, and a bit short on a 20".

Yup, direct drive. Lawnmower dealers can help with the seal. There will be a metal flag on the powerhead with the numbers they need. Or you can try www3.sears.com. Have the model number off the leg handy.

My '68ish 5HP Eska had the direct drive, swivel the motor for reverse. My '70ish TW 7.5 had neutral and forward only, swivel the motor 180 degrees for reverse. I forget where the shifter was located on the 7.5, sorry.

Re: Another Ted Williams 7.5 question

Mine is like ebay item #280120464270, the tiller is a twist grip and has a spot marked "Shift Zone". I just don't see any shift linkage. There is a lever on the right side, but it controls a rod that goes up under the flywheel and controls spark advance. The tiller only moves the carb linkage and theres a choke knob and choke linkage, as well as a mixture knob that adjusts the carb.
No shift lever?? Could this be a centrifical clutch motor like the Tanaka built Gamefishers?
The way the motor bracket and king pin are designed, it don't allow this motor to pivot all the way around. It only turns about 45 degrees each way.

Re: Another Ted Williams 7.5 question

I just picked one of these up off ebay and was doing exactly as you described. This is what I found: the nuetral/drive shifter on the side of the motor activates that verticle rod. It pushes it up to prevent WOT in nuetral. It also is attached to a clutch mechanism on the inside of the downtube. When in drive the whole clutch is allowed to spin @ engine rpm. When in nuetral the mech stops the outer sleeve of the clutch and allows a compression spring to slide around the inner part of the clutch. If the prop does not spin free when engine is off both ways there is a clutch issue. 1 of 2 possible causes- spring is rusted & just needs to be broken free, or what is wrong with mine- the tab that attaches the spring to the outer sleeve is broken. Sorry for the long reply - hope this helps. :)

This one seems to be in gear at all times, The prop will only turn one way with the motor off. It makes a clicking sound when turned the other way.
The shift handle moves pretty easy, but does have a detent type of feel when flipped. it moves about 80 degrees.

I also have a 7.5 - and when I go to Drive, the prop does not spin - do I have to separate the PowerHead ( ENGINE) to egt to the spring/tab you speak of - or just go in from the top - recoil /flywheel? - Thanks -

I also have a 7.5 Ted Williams - and it does not go into gear - the spring you speak of - is it accessible from the top or do I have to separate the Power-Head/Engine to get to it and possibly the tab - What shape is this 'tab' ? - Thanks
