Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions, other than spraying the nooks and crannys w/ carb cleaner. I've heard of letting them soak in gasoline, is this good or a no no? Whats your best methods? tia

Gasoline is not a no-no, but it's just not very effective against the varnish that was deposited by gasoline. Carb soak in carb cleaner is best, spraying with aerosol carb cleaner is next best. That spray will remove anything, including 3M Scotch-Grip Rubber and Gasket Adhesive #847 which is most insidious.

Gasoline residue caused the varnish in the first place so it will not do a very good job of removing gum and varnish. Any number of carb cleaners are available at auto stores.

Re: Cleaning Carbs

Aside from putting the carbs and letting them soak in the cleaner, what time frame would work best?

Re: Cleaning Carbs

If you soak in carb cleaner, I would leave them overnight. If you use the aerosol, you don't have much choice. That stuff evaporates in minutes. Just keep spraying in all passages, etc. until the can's empty. If you have compressed air, use that in conjunction with the spraying process to blow out debris.

Re: Cleaning Carbs

Can anyone recommend a good liquid cleaner and/or a good place to get it? Went to the local autozone and I could only find carb cleaner in an aerosol can.

Re: Cleaning Carbs

I picked up a gallon can of chemical cleaner that had a basket so you can get the carbs out without getting your hand in that stuff. I got this at Autozone on Easter Sunday...glad they were open, the stuff is called Berryman Chem Dip carb and parts cleaner. It was 20.00 and cleaned my carbs like new and they were bad, I finished by spraying down with carb cleaner in a can to make sure all that junk was out.

Re: Cleaning Carbs

thanks for all of your replies. sorry for all the little questions, but i'd rather be the guy asking the stupid questions than the guy making the stupid mistakes.

Is there anything I should watch out for when letting the carbs soak in the cleaner? Any part of the carb I should not put in the cleaner, i.e. the bowl? Also, I'm somewhat new with a carb off of an outboard, but I dont figure on having any problems removing them from the motor itself. However, how much disassembly is necessary after its removed from the motor? Do I take the carb apart as much as possible before soaking, or can I just set the carb in as one piece?

Re: Cleaning Carbs

Dismantle the carb and place the carb body in the cleaner. When you're done soaking it, use the spray cleaner as a follow-up...Make sure to remove the orifaces (Jets) and clean them well..

The best carb cleaner on the market can be had at any Yamaha motorcycle dealer. The stuff is amazing. Try it and see for yourself.

Re: Cleaning Carbs

found a big can of Berryman's carb cleaner, so am trying that....i didn't realize the 200 hp outboard had 3 carbs though! Any ideas of where the mixture screws/needles are? I lookked all over but could not find any...I assumed they would be larger screws, but I didn't see any that looked right. I removed two screws from the bottom bowl, but dont think these are related. Ideas?

Re: Cleaning Carbs

its a 1986 evinrude 200hp. Would the orifaces (jets) be located somewhere on the main body or on the bottom float bowl portion? There are two holes on either side of the float bowls, and there are some very small screws (look like they might be able to screw out) inside the holes, but I dont know if these are the jets or not. once I take the jets out, they don't need to be adjusted when put back in, do they? And I was under the impression that there was some needle to adjust as well to make it lean/rich, but I am unable to find anything that can be adjusted like this.
