the rule of thumb is move the decimal point of the hp to the left 1 place. gives gallons per hour used, at wide open throttle. 115hp 11.5 gallons per hour. also depends on the boat the motor is on.. if water logged and carring extra water weight, it reduces rapidly.

Once you are up on plane back the throttle off a bit adjust your trim and you will find a sweet spot for much better fuel use. WOT does burn the gas.... you just have to treat the outboard like you treat your car. Hot rod starts will always consume more fuel.

My '86 115 gets 2.5 km/litre ( 5.9 mpg(US))when I nurse it at 3300 rpm on a 15'er.
At WOT it drops to 1 km/litre
My '76 50 gets 3 km/litre on a similar boat. 7 mpg
Measured with a Navman 5500 gps with the fuel sensor.

Mentioned earlier, it depends on what you have it on, and what you are doing. I have a '90 115 on a 18' runabout used for pulling/sports. 5-6 hours with four people will burn about 12 gallons. That's a lot hard throttle, and some cruising. I say if it runs smooth, don't worry about it.

Wow that's really good milage bmal!
If I set my 15' 1200 lb boat to 3300 ( maximun efficiency)and cruise I burn up a 6 gallon tank in about 1 hour with just me in it. Gets me about 30 miles.

Thanks to all for the responses....all good info...I am pushing a 28 foot pontoon with a hard enclosure from midships to aft, lots of weight, also had 8 people on board for first trip up the lake, again, thanks to all.

I had an '89 115 Tower on a 17' Ranger Fisherman (680C) which was deep V and padded. It had a 10 gallon built in tank. I never carried extra fuel and never ran out including a Sunday afternoon's water skiing.

Don't know if it was the engine or the combination but that was the most fuel efficient, sweetest running thing I ever had.
