I got my Prestolite MGD4006 starter rebuilt and it cranks good again, but now the driver gear is shot and I have to manually push it up in to the flywheel to get it to crank! It is a real pain to take the cover off and push the gear up everytime I want to start it, is there any fix for those gears or does anyone know where I could find a replacement one?

It is the 12 tooth style.

Thanks for the help!

No, it was suggested to me to spray a bit of carb cleaner where the gear meets the clutch on the drive gear, where would you suggest I put the 3 in 1 oil?

on the shaft, where the gear spins up. not enough for it to drip into the motor. the part # is 383195. tried several places, listed as NLA, you can try, tcoutboard.com or seawaymarine.com seaway has a lot of nla parts, they stocked up on. call tcoutboard they can't answer all the emails apparently.

you've probably already heard this. are you sure the battery is good. have you had it load tested. take jumper cable from pos battery to pos on the starter, see if it will engage. this part is canned, copy and pasted from another post. remove the cable from battery and motor, also from solenoid to starter. clean till shiney. also check for any nicks of swelling, as they tend to get nicked and deteriorate from the inside out. the replace, and tighten well. 90% of starter problems are battery cables. you can put a couple of drops of a light oil on the starter shaft, like 3 N 1 oil. don't drown it. you don't want it to run down into the started. wd 40 is a no no.

I have the same engine and finally gave up the starter. I went and found a fly wheel from a 69 triumph 55hp and bought a new 9 tooth starter and have lost the problem once and for all.

Re: More Starter troubles 68 evinrude 55hp

So, I called and spoke to Pat at TC outboard, he said that he did not have any starter parts for this model, but that he didn't think that the drive gear was bad. He said that it was an inertial starter system and that either the starter is not spinning fast enough to send the gear all the way up, or that the shaft needs to be cleaned and lubed (I think I see a trend developing here...). He also mentioned that since I just got the starter rebuilt it may need to be run for awhile to loosen up, like I should let it crank for 15-seconds.

So, I guess that is what I will do, get the shaft cleaned and lubed and check all of my cable connections and see where that gets me.

Thanks for the input Cancan, I asked that same question here last week and was told that it was not going to be cost effective to swap it all out. Maybe if I can't get it working properly, I will look into that again. ;)

If it works you are more than welcome to say "I told you so" all you want. :D

I hope you are right and I will find out tomorrow night when I work on it!

Lay it on me, man:
"you told me so, you told me so, you told me so, you told me so!" :D

I figured that the connections and battery were good, so I wiped the shaft down with a clean rag and the just put some Rem oil on there (above and below the gear) and worked it up and down for a few minutes.

Viola! it cranks!

thanks again for the help
