Mercury 402 Question

Hello,

I have a 1978 Mercury 402 (40 HP) outboard. One of the wires coming out of the "junction box" is broken. First of all, what is the purpose of the "junction box"? Can it be opened?

Secondly, can I simply splice a new piece of wire onto the end of the broken wire? A new box runs about $210. Sure would be nice to fix it myself :)

Thanks.

Re: Mercury 402 Question

I don't have the foggyist what your calling a junction box and don't think anyone else does either you need to ck a online parts source like http://www.mercruiserparts.com/so you know what the part is called

Sorry about the confusion. My parts lists calls it a "junction box". But I check at Oldmercs.com and its called an "Ignition Switch Box". Does that help?

Re: Mercury 402 Question

The switch box is the brains of the ign system, it does not open. With some care you can repair broken wires, I usally slip heat shrink on the wire and solder the joint then coat the splice with liquid tape, when that drys I slip the heat shrink over the splice and shrink it

Re: Mercury 402 Question

Thanks for the advice. There isn't much wire left sticking out of the box. But I'll give it a try.

Thanks again
