Test Propellers ...Lets discuss!

Hi All.
I'm hoping to get some feedback on test propellers. I have never had one...but have seen them on occasion.

I have a 115 HP Evinrude that I just got running. My boats transom is rotted very bad. I need to sell the motor but want to make sure it's 100% right before I sell it...so I am thinking a test prop might be the solution.

Trouble is...I don't know where to find one or if they even work.......Is it possible to run and engine this BIG in a test tank WIDE OPEN without losing all you're water with a test prop?

I saw an article on making a test prop once.....by trimming a couple inches back on the blades.....anyone know where one of these articles are or where and how much a test prop costs?

Laddies should be able to tell you what they look like. I saw one at a Merc dealer back in the '55 time frame and it looked like a flat circular disc with some little bent up tangs on it.

I'd attempt to buy one before you make one. Without it, first time you goose it your tank will be dry.

Also unless you keep fresh water coming in, it won't take but a few minutes to get the water hot and offer the opportunity to overheat your engine.

A test prop requires a large, properly baffled, test tank. A test prop for a thru-hub exhaust V-4 as shown in my last price list was $150, it would be more now.

I've seen them before......

Trouble is I don't know how to get my hands on one or how well they work.

I also read an article once on how to fashion you're own by trimming back a couple of inches of you're props blades.

Thanks outboard for the link. Like the verbiage associated with the test wheel. Good info.

I just answered this question over at aomci.org Ax-A-Member. Think $369.99 as an example. Plus a $2000 test tank.

Great link for the test tanks!
I was a welder in a former life....my wheels have been turning on one of these for a while....

Cost of the new test prop is a little out of the question....I think I can probably pick up a boat for $369:)

I have a nice set that I put together one at a time buying on Ebay. Never paid more than $50 for them.
