Hi:
I am attempting to remove the lower unit on a 120 johnson. I have removed all of the various bolts and the unit drops about 1.5" but then appears to be hung up on the shift rod. From other posts I have gathered that there is a bolt that must be removed under the carbs. I can tell the shift rod comes up into the center of that area under the carbs, but it would be impossible for me to reach unless I removed the carbs. Am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks JR

You should have a lower cover that is split down the center and can be removed by the simple expedient of removing four screws from the starboard side, then pulling the snaps inside of the lower cowl.

That should take <10 minutes and give you open access to the shift rod.

Re: 1994 120 johnson removing lower unit

Hi Robert:
It was right where you said it was, I actually took the incorrect bolt off the first time and that is why I guess the lower unit would not come free. I did not have the extension in my socket set to reach the bolt so I removed the lower cowling as suggested by another member and I got right in there.
Thanks for your time.

Hi Ezeke:
Thanks for the info, I took the lower cowling off and that was the ticket. They don't mention doing that in the Seloc Manual and you probably don't exactly need to but it sure makes access a whole lot easier. I could actually see the "mechanics" of how the shift rod was attached at that point and understand how to remove it. Thanks for your time.
