Hi, I am looking at buying a particular 1978 55HP Johnson Seahorse outboard. The engine runs well and has compression of 120/120 psi in both cylinders, cools well, but the oil in the lower unit is somewhat milky. I didn?t see any cracks or damage to the lower unit so I am not sure where the water is getting into the case. I think the seal might be the culprit but I am not sure. Dose anyone have any idea where or how the water could be getting in?

You are wise to be concerned. Water can mess it up pretty bad. Can you get a test run before you buy?

Drive shaft seal, propeller shaft seal, drain & fill plugs, shift rod seal. Why don't you just change the oil (use ONLY OMC/BRP Premium Blend oil) and check it again after a few outings? You don't know how long it took to accumulate that water.

OR, if you plan to do a new water pump, that is a great time to change the drive shaft seal.

Got a question start a new thread of your own.

Got water in your gearcase you have defective seals. Requires urgent attention.
