Newbie Starter Motor Question

Hi everyone,
I am new to boating and know very little about it, but I am learning. I just purchased a 1997 Bayliner 1950 w/ a Mercruiser 3.0 LX engine. When I try to start it the starter just clicks, it does this a few times and then the engine starts - the engine seems to be turning over a little slow (but I don't know for sure how fast it should sound). I installed a new battery, so I know it is not a low battery. I am assuming it needs a new starter / solenoid. I went to my local boat dealer, he told me it is rare that these starters go, except when submersed in water - which is why I am writing to get other's opinions. He stated a new starter is $225.00. I found an aftermarket on the internet for $74.95 from "crankandcharge" - here is the link:

If I do need a new starter has anyone ever used one of these a/market units? Or should I buy an OEM starter for the additional money? Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

That re manufactured starter should work just fine.

Or, have yours rebuilt; have you cleaned all the contacts, including the grounds?

No, I haven't cleaned the contacts, is there a good chance that will take care of the problem? The boat is at my vacation house (300 miles away) so time is of the essence. I am hoping to go up with the starter in hand or have a fix that will almost certainly fix it. Thank you for your help.

Cleaning, a new spare solenoid on board doesn't hurt; I even carry spare wires, and an ignition switch.

Re: Newbie Starter Motor Question

Spare parts - I will do that. I am new to boating, but an avid snowmobiler and spare parts on the sleds have saved me a few times. I think for the $75.00 I will buy a new starter, clean the contacts and save the old starter / solenoid for spares if it is good. I think replacing the starter just takes a piece out of the puzzle. Thanks for your advice Coors.
